Definition

An audition is the process in which an actor performs prepared material—usually sides (short excerpts from the script)—in front of a Casting Director, Director, and sometimes Producers to demonstrate their suitability for a role. Auditions are the primary gateway for actors to be considered for film, television, theater, and commercial projects.

Purpose of an Audition

  • Talent Evaluation: Allows casting teams to see how an actor interprets a character.
  • Screen Presence: Tests how an actor looks and behaves on camera.
  • Compatibility: Helps directors gauge chemistry between cast members.
  • Professionalism: Demonstrates an actor’s preparedness, reliability, and ability to take direction.

Types of Auditions

  • Cold Reading: Actors are given sides with little preparation time.
  • Prepared Audition: Actors bring rehearsed material, often monologues or specific scenes.
  • Screen Test: A filmed audition, usually for major roles, to evaluate how the actor appears on camera.
  • Callbacks: A second (or multiple) round(s) of auditions to narrow down choices.
  • Self-Tape: Increasingly common—actors record their audition at home and submit digitally.

The Audition Process

  1. Casting Call: Actors are invited based on submissions or agent recommendations.
  2. Performance: The actor performs sides or monologues.
  3. Direction: The Casting Director or Director may give adjustments to see how flexible the actor is.
  4. Review: Performances are recorded, reviewed, and compared to other candidates.
  5. Callback or Offer: Selected actors are invited back or cast in the role.

Why Auditions Matter

Auditions are crucial for both actors and filmmakers:

  • For actors, they’re an opportunity to showcase talent and book work.
  • For filmmakers, they’re a way to discover the right performer who can bring a character to life and fit the ensemble.
