Definition

A call time is the specific time a cast or crew member is required to report to set for work. Call times are listed on the call sheet and vary depending on the role, department, and responsibilities for the day. While the crew often shares a general call time, some individuals may be required earlier (pre-call) or later, depending on the needs of the production.

How Call Times Work

  • General Call: The standard call time when most of the crew is expected on set.
  • Pre-Call: An earlier call time for departments that need extra setup, such as makeup, hair, or special effects.
  • Staggered Call Times: Some cast or departments are scheduled later in the day if their scenes or work aren’t needed right away.
  • Grace Period: Industry standards often allow for a few minutes of flexibility, but punctuality is expected.

Call Time on the Call Sheet

On a call sheet, call times are clearly listed in grids:

  • Crew Grid: Lists crew members, departments, and their respective call times.
  • Talent Grid: Lists actors, their roles, makeup/wardrobe times, and set call times.

Additional notes may include transportation arrangements, meal breaks, and estimated wrap time.

Importance of Call Times

  • Efficiency: Ensures the crew is ready when the shooting day begins, minimizing delays.
  • Coordination: Keeps multiple departments synchronized so production runs smoothly.
  • Respect: Being on time demonstrates professionalism and respect for fellow crew members.
  • Budget Control: Delays caused by lateness increase overtime costs and disrupt schedules.

Best Practices for Crew and Cast

  • Always arrive before your listed call time to allow for parking, check-in, and setup.
  • Check the call sheet daily, as call times can change based on shooting progress.
  • For actors, makeup/wardrobe call times are often earlier than their on-set performance time.

Why It Matters

The call time is the foundation of daily production discipline. Without strict adherence, schedules fall behind, budgets increase, and tensions rise. On professional sets, the phrase “Don’t be late to your call time” is a golden rule.
