Definition

The cast refers to all on-screen performers in a film, television production, commercial, or stage play. It includes principal actors, supporting roles, day players, and background performers who together bring the story to life through performance. In filmmaking, the cast is one half of the creative equation—the other being the crew.

Types of Cast Members

  • Principal Cast: Lead and supporting actors with major speaking roles who carry the story.
  • Day Players / Guest Roles: Hired for one or a few days of work, often appearing in specific scenes.
  • Featured Extras: Background performers who may be clearly visible or interact briefly with principal cast.
  • Background / Extras: Non-speaking performers used to populate scenes and create realism.

The size and structure of the cast vary widely depending on the scale of production—from a single performer in a short film to hundreds in large ensemble features.

Casting Process

The casting process is overseen by the Casting Director in collaboration with the Director and Producers.

Typical stages include:

  • Breakdown: Creating a list of character descriptions and traits.
  • Auditions: Actors perform “sides” (short scenes) to demonstrate suitability for roles.
  • Callbacks: Shortlisted actors return for further readings or chemistry tests.
  • Final Selection: Producers and the director approve casting choices based on performance, availability, and budget.

Union productions follow agreements with organizations like ACTRA (in Canada) or SAG-AFTRA (in the U.S.) for rates, contracts, and working conditions.

Principal vs. Ensemble Cast

  • Principal Cast: Usually a small group of main characters central to the story.
  • Ensemble Cast: A larger group with shared screen time and multiple storylines (e.g., Love Actually, The Avengers).

Why It Matters

The cast is the face of a production—the element most visible to the audience and most closely associated with the project’s success. A strong cast not only delivers the emotional core of the story but also influences marketing, financing, and distribution opportunities.
