Company Move

Definition

A Company Move refers to the process of relocating the entire cast, crew, and equipment from one filming location to another during the same shooting day. It marks a major logistical shift in production, requiring coordination across all departments to ensure the transition is efficient, safe, and timely.

In production reports, a company move is often logged to track travel time and ensure accurate scheduling for union or insurance purposes.

Purpose and Use

Company moves occur when a production needs to shoot multiple scenes at different locations in a single day—such as moving from an interior set to an exterior street scene, or from one neighborhood to another.

Typical reasons for a company move include:

  • Shooting at multiple locations that represent different story environments.
  • Transitioning between studio and on-location setups.
  • Moving from daylight to nighttime scenes in separate spaces.
  • Logistical constraints such as location permits, lighting conditions, or space limitations.

Because these moves involve every department, they are carefully scheduled and usually communicated on the call sheet the night before.

Execution on Set

When a company move is called, the 1st Assistant Director (1st AD) or Production Manager (PM) coordinates the process:

  1. Wrap at Current Location: Departments strike gear, load trucks, and check for left-behind items.
  2. Travel Time: Crew and cast relocate, often in production vehicles or personal cars.
  3. Rebuild at New Location: Departments unload, set up, and reestablish equipment for the next scene.
  4. Crew Meal or Break: Often scheduled during travel to maximize efficiency.
  5. “Ready to Shoot” Call: The 1st AD resumes normal operations once the company is settled.

Depending on distance and complexity, a company move can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours.

Why It Matters

Company moves are among the most time-consuming transitions in filmmaking. Poorly planned moves can derail a schedule, exhaust the crew, or cut into shooting time. Efficient planning—clear communication, accurate travel estimates, and departmental coordination—can save significant time and budget.

A well-executed company move demonstrates professionalism, organization, and teamwork across the entire production unit.
