Craft Service

Definition

Craft Service—often shortened to craft or crafty—is the department responsible for supplying snacks, beverages, and light refreshments to the cast and crew throughout the shooting day. Craft service is available between meals and is distinct from catering, which provides the scheduled hot meals (usually lunch and sometimes a second meal on long days).

Crafty is the fuel that keeps the crew going: coffee, snacks, hydration, and quick calories during demanding production schedules.

What Craft Service Provides

The exact offerings vary depending on budget, production scale, and region, but common craft items include:

  • Hot beverages: coffee, tea, hot chocolate
  • Cold beverages: water, juice, electrolyte drinks, soda
  • Basic snacks: granola bars, chips, crackers, pretzels
  • Fresh items: fruit, vegetables, muffins, bagels
  • Protein options: nuts, cheese, yogurt, trail mix
  • Sweets: chocolate, cookies, candy
  • Dietary needs: gluten-free, vegan, and allergy-friendly options (more common on union or higher-budget sets)

On larger or union sets, craft may also prepare simple hot snacks (grilled cheese, quesadillas, oatmeal), but this depends on the production.

Craft Service vs. Catering

These two departments are often confused by newcomers, but they serve very different functions:

Craft Service

  • Runs all day
  • Snacks, drinks, grab-and-go items
  • Typically staffed by craft service workers
  • Located at a dedicated craft table or truck

Catering

  • Provides scheduled hot meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner/2nd meal)
  • Serves heavier, plated dishes
  • Typically staffed by external catering companies
  • Must meet union timing requirements (e.g., 6-hour meal windows)

Understanding this distinction is essential for set etiquette: asking crafty for “lunch” is a rookie mistake.

Importance of Craft Service

Craft is more than convenience—it’s an essential part of maintaining crew health, morale, and stamina. Productions move fast, and crew rarely get long breaks outside of lunch. Crafty ensures people can:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Grab quick energy without leaving set
  • Manage long hours and unpredictable schedules
  • Maintain focus during physically and mentally demanding work

A well-stocked, well-run crafty table is considered a sign of a respectful and professional production.

On-Set Etiquette

  • Don’t crowd or block crafty during rush times.
  • Don’t raid crafty for full meal portions.
  • Don’t take entire boxes or cases of items (unless permitted).
  • Respect dietary sections and labeling.
  • Say thank you—the craft team works nonstop.
