Books that Should be Movies

September 5 By Iggy Leave a Comment

There are so many good books out there that get made into movies but the movies don’t end up working or coming even close to as good as the books. There are a handful of books that I have read that I would love to see come to life on the big screen. I think in the right hand the following books could make for some really fantastic films.

Porno – Irvine Welsh

This is probably my number one for books that should be movies. This sequel to Trainspotting was such a good read that I would have loved to see it as a film, unfortunately I think the cast are all too old now and trying to get them all back together would be difficult. It couldn’t be done without the original cast though and the original director. Trainspotting was such a good book and film, I wish Porno had been made.

In the Skin of a Lion – Michael Ondaatje

Ondaatje’s The English Patient was made into a film years ago but In the Skin of a Lion has not made it to the big screen. The book is beautifully written and has such great potential to become a visually stunning film with fantastic characters. I would love to see this book become a film as it is rich in the history of Toronto, Ontario which is where I call home.

The Catcher in the Rye – J.D. Salinger

If the right actor was cast in the role of Holden Caulfield this movie could be really great, I’m actually surprised that a book that is so widely known and still growing in popularity has not been made into a movie. Holden is such an identifiable character and speaks to many generations, I would love to see this book on screen.

Survivor – Chuck Palahniuk

They got Palahniuk right with Fight Club but missed the mark with Choke. Survivor is such an interesting read and Tender Branson is such a brilliant character, I want to see the world that a director creates and compare it to the one I create in my head each time I read this book. Palahniuk writes such strange and tormented characters that I can’t help but love them. With the right director and the right actor this could be the next Fight Club.

The Bell Jar – Sylvia Plath

This one has been rumored to be a movie for at least 6 years. Julia Stiles was attached to it but it hasn’t come to be yet. I loved this book and think it could make for a great drama, it just needs the right actress to play Esther Greenwood. I think Julia Stiles is too old for this role and would like to see a young, strong female play the part. This project has been in development for so long that I am losing hope.
