A Closed Set is a production environment in which access is restricted to only essential personnel during filming. Typically, this means that only the director, cinematographer, key camera and sound crew, and relevant department heads are permitted on set. All non-essential crew members, visitors, and monitors are cleared to maintain privacy and focus.
Closed sets are most often called for scenes involving nudity, simulated sex, intimate performances, or other sensitive subject matter. However, they can also be used to protect confidentiality, prevent distractions, or maintain creative concentration.
Purpose and Use
The main goal of a closed set is to protect the comfort, dignity, and safety of the performers, as well as the integrity of the production.
Reasons for closing a set include:
- Intimacy or nudity: Ensuring privacy for actors during vulnerable or revealing scenes.
- Sensitive material: Handling emotionally intense or personal subject matter (e.g., assault, grief, trauma).
- Confidentiality: Keeping plot twists, celebrity appearances, or proprietary designs secret.
- Performance focus: Limiting distractions during complex or emotionally demanding scenes.
The call for a closed set typically comes from the director, 1st Assistant Director (1st AD), or Intimacy Coordinator, depending on the nature of the scene.
On-Set Protocol
- The 1st AD announces that the set will be closed and asks all non-essential crew to clear the area.
- Only approved personnel—usually listed in the call sheet or discussed in advance—are allowed to remain.
- Monitors may be turned off or covered to prevent unauthorized viewing.
- In scenes involving intimacy, an Intimacy Coordinator oversees performer safety and consent protocols.
All crew members present are expected to maintain strict professionalism and confidentiality.
Modern Standards
Modern productions, particularly under union guidelines (SAG-AFTRA, ACTRA, Equity), have adopted formal closed-set policies that prioritize performer consent, comfort, and oversight. Productions may also use modesty garments, barriers, and minimal crew footprints to support privacy.
