Seattle has camera and lighting suppliers, production studios and nonprofit filmmaker resources. Smaller crews can compare a rental package with a room that already includes useful equipment, but access conditions vary. Make the booking around your actual recording, crew size and load-in, and distinguish active equipment suppliers from organisations offering classes or post facilities.
Guide area: Seattle and its surrounding production area. Suppliers outside the city are identified in the listings. The exact filming address and support-parking address determine the responsible property and permit authority.

Start here: Seattle Film Office production resources for the local production route; Seattle production resources for additional crew and suppliers. Send the actual location, dates, crew size and public-space requirements so the office can direct the enquiry.
Planning note: US dollars is the local budgeting currency. Rental, studio and catering entries are booking enquiries, rather than guaranteed stock or quoted rates. This guide was reviewed on October 30, 2026; dated programme rules and live availability should be checked before committing.
Seattle Film Permits and Permissions
Start with the Seattle Film Office and its Film Manual for public-property, street, park, parking and related production questions. Send the exact locations and working footprint, including prep, load-in and wrap. A private studio booking does not answer the permissions for equipment or vehicles placed outside it. The Film Office lists filmoffice@seattle.gov and 206-233-3948 for production enquiries.
Ask the office to review the actual location plan before fixing a date. Include preparation, filming and wrap, working areas, the full vehicle list and any impacts on public access. Confirm the applicable lead time, insurance wording and charges with the authority handling the address.
| Permission / authority | What to book and what to confirm |
|---|---|
| Seattle Film Office resources and manual Municipal filming route | Start with the Seattle Film Office and its Film Manual for public-property, street, park, parking and related production questions. Send the exact locations and working footprint, including prep, load-in and wrap. A private studio booking does not answer the permissions for equipment or vehicles placed outside it. The Film Office lists filmoffice@seattle.gov and 206-233-3948 for production enquiries. |
| Seattle production resources Regional guidance | Use this resource for the relevant jurisdiction and local liaison. A regional or state film office can direct an enquiry, but location permission and municipal services still need to be confirmed for the actual property. |
| Seattle production resources Local production contacts | Use the directory to identify local production services, crew and suppliers. Ask the office about the department and scale you need; a directory listing is a lead to verify, not a reserved booking. |
Prepare one location brief for each address. Show the camera position, working area, equipment, cast and crew, trucks, parking, prep and wrap times, and anything that affects neighbours. Include the support area even if it sits on another property. A clear plan lets the authority assess the activity you actually intend to carry out.
| Stage of the enquiry | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Before holding a location | Identify the owner and every authority responsible for the working area. Ask whether the planned activity needs permission, notification, a permit, services or a location agreement. A location enquiry does not reserve the site. |
| Before fixing the shooting date | Obtain the applicable application deadline, insurance wording, site conditions and service availability. Ask how changes to hours, vehicles or action affect the application. Do not treat a normal processing period as guaranteed approval. |
| Before paying deposits | Separate application fees, property charges, refundable security, parking, police or traffic services, overtime and reinstatement. Record what is payable if permission is refused or the date moves. |
| Before the call sheet goes out | Keep the issued permissions, approved site plan, owner contact and restrictions together. Check that the location, dates, hours, activity and support parking match the final plan. |
For a student or very small production, describe the real footprint and ask about the relevant route. A free location, unpaid cast or a compact camera does not establish that all municipal and property requirements have been met. Use the office’s written response to build the schedule and budget.
Transit, Drones, Night Work and Special Effects
For Seattle, describe the activity as well as the location. Transit facilities, railways, controlled buildings and land outside the municipality may involve another operator. Ask the local film contact to identify the authority for the exact footprint, including a base or support area away from camera.
For a drone shot, bring a qualified operator into the planning before promising an angle or schedule. Federal aviation requirements, airspace and the take-off property must all be assessed. Give the coordinator details of night work, smoke, replicas, stunts or visible emergency activity early enough to plan public information and any specialist services.
| Specialist filming route | What to book and what to confirm |
|---|---|
| Local film and property coordination | Describe the exact facility, scene and public impact. Request the relevant operator, road, park or specialist-activity contact before booking. |
| FAA commercial drone information | Official national route for commercial drone requirements. The operator must assess the actual airspace and operation alongside the local property permissions. |
| Activity | Questions for the coordinator |
|---|---|
| Transit, railways and controlled facilities | Ask the operator about filming areas, commercial use, passenger access, supervision, equipment, power and the working window. Arrange the actual facility permission; a nearby street booking does not settle access inside a station or vehicle. |
| Night scenes and conspicuous action | Describe loud dialogue, playback, smoke, replicas, emergency vehicles, uniforms and visible stunts. Discuss public notification, noise, neighbours and any required specialist services before scheduling the scene. |
| Drones and moving vehicles | Give the responsible operator the coordinates, height, intended movement, take-off area and public interface. Check aviation, landowner and location requirements separately. A location agreement is only one part of the plan. |
| Children, animals, weapons and effects | Assign a qualified person to the relevant activity and verify the applicable rules with the responsible authority. Put rehearsals, welfare, supervision and specialist preparation in the budget rather than adding them on the day. |
Finding and Scouting Seattle Locations
Map rental pickups and the shoot against the actual bridges, traffic and parking situation. Put the rental collection entrance on the pickup instructions.
For wet-weather days, establish covered loading, equipment holding and a workable route from vehicle to set. Keep the studio's booked hours realistic for drying off and unloading.
| Location research | What to book and what to confirm |
|---|---|
| Seattle production resources | Ask for location research, local scouts or service-company contacts matching the required setting. Establish the real address and permissions before treating a reference photograph as a usable location. |
| Seattle Film Office resources and manual | Check the authority and location conditions before making a commitment. Give the proposed prep, filming, wrap, vehicle and public-access details. |
Scout at the intended shooting time and bring the sound recordist or a reliable recording setup. Check traffic cycles, nearby businesses, building services, aircraft, wind, refrigeration and public foot traffic. Photograph the loading entrance, step-free route, sockets, toilets and the actual place where the crew can wait. These details often matter more to the working day than the widest possible establishing shot.
| On the scout | Record in the location agreement or plan |
|---|---|
| Access and footprint | Who opens up, which rooms and entrances are included, when prep starts, when the last case must leave, and whether there is a usable step-free route for performers and crew. |
| Sound, light and neighbours | Normal operating noise, controllable lights, blackout, nearby works, quiet periods, public access and any adjoining tenants who need notice. Test rather than infer sound isolation from the appearance of a room. |
| Protection and welfare | Floor and wall protection, washrooms, drinking water, changing space, meal holding, waste, shade or shelter, and the agreed response to damage. |
| Changes and weather | A weather decision time, alternative dates, cancellation charges, overtime, restoration and the named person allowed to approve a change. |
Keep a location release alongside the municipal or facility approval. For a small shoot, a controlled interior close to the supplier and crew may save more than a visually impressive location with repeated moves. Use the HTFS location agreement template to organise the discussion, then adapt the terms to the property and production.
Camera, Lighting, Grip and Sound Rentals
Compare the following Seattle resources on the same equipment list and dates. Community-media access and a commercial rental counter can have different eligibility, training, insurance and project conditions. Keep the actual collection address and return deadline in the working schedule.
| Rental house / resource | What to book and what to confirm |
|---|---|
| Glazer's Camera Seattle; confirm the rental collection point. | Local camera, lens and production-equipment rental enquiries. The City's production resource list links to Glazer's; verify the current kit, security and pickup/return arrangements directly with the rental department. |
| Koerner Camera Seattle 101 Nickerson Street, Suite B500, Seattle. | Cinema cameras, lenses and prep facilities. Specify the Seattle branch, build requirements and prep slot; the Portland office is a separate pickup plan. |
| Victory Studios Seattle. | Cameras, lighting, grip, sound, support gear and studio enquiries. Separate location hire from equipment or room packages and ask what comes with each booking. |
| Wintersfilm grip and lighting Seattle / Tacoma; confirm depot | Regional grip/lighting hire. Specify continuous fixtures, power, modifiers, support and transport and confirm local stock, checkout, security and any required crew. |
| Northwest Grip Seattle-area truck enquiries | Grip-truck packages for production. Request contents, driver/crew, vehicle size, mileage, loading and day/overtime terms; a truck package is distinct from passenger transport. |
Build a complete working package
| Department | Include in the request |
|---|---|
| Camera and lenses | Body and mount, the actual lens set, filters, batteries and chargers, approved media, card reader, tripod or other support, monitor and the cables needed for the full build. Ask for a prep slot and test the intended recording format. |
| Lighting and grip | Fixture models, modifiers, stands, sandbags, flags, distribution, extension lengths and suitable transport. State available power and whether the setup is indoors, exposed to wind or needs a qualified rigging crew. |
| Production sound | Recorder, microphones, boom, radio channels, mounting and wind protection, timecode and the monitoring arrangement. Give the number of speaking performers and any costume, vehicle or exterior challenges. |
| Booking and cover | Prep, collection, shoot and return dates; the person collecting; required insurance or security; replacement values; out-of-hours support; and the process if a held item becomes unavailable. |
Compare the total for the same package and time period. A low body rate can become a higher bill after batteries, media, transport and a late return. Ask whether collection and return days are charged, how a weekend is calculated, which items can be substituted and who is authorised to collect. Put the written inventory and condition photographs with the production paperwork.
Seattle Studios and Production Spaces
Seattle's smaller rooms include a two-hour South Seattle studio, hourly West Seattle space and a Denny Way photo room. Confirm continuous-light and dialogue conditions in the actual room, and account for loading, parking and the crew limit.
| Studio / production space | What to book and what to confirm |
|---|---|
| Victory Studios Green and white cyc rooms. | Publishes two studio sizes, 2,600 and 850 sq ft, alongside equipment and support rooms. Request the current room specification, sound requirements, exclusive access and equipment package. |
| Northwest Film Forum spaces Nonprofit filmmaker facilities. | Its current page advertises cinema, workshop-room and edit-lab access while listing equipment rentals as on hiatus. Contact staff about the actual facility you need; do not treat the cinema or edit lab as a ready-to-book production stage. |
| Tiger Tail Studio South Seattle; approximately 700 sq ft | Photo/video room with a stated two-hour minimum and controlled-light/sound features. Confirm acoustic suitability for the actual scene, continuous lights, crew capacity and setup/strike. |
| Starfall Studios Seattle West Seattle | Hourly creative room for photography/video. Ask for the current floor plan, continuous lights, sound, load-in, privacy and the booking minimum. |
| Saltwater Studio Seattle 114 W Denny Way, Suite A283 | Hourly photography/creative workspace with posing furniture. Confirm video use, continuous fixtures, sound, lift/load-in, crew limit and restoration time. |
What a studio quote should answer
| Issue | Booking detail |
|---|---|
| Usable shooting area | Clear dimensions and height, cyc or backdrop size, rigging restrictions, floor loading and the room left after lights, set, camera and off-camera people are in position. |
| Dialogue and ventilation | Outside-noise isolation, air-conditioning noise, nearby bookings and whether ventilation can be controlled without making the working space unsuitable. Visit during normal building operation and record a test. |
| Access and power | Loading door and lift dimensions, stairs, parking, distribution, available circuits and who may make connections. Check the route for the largest case or set piece. |
| Complete booking cost | Prep and strike, minimum hours, overtime, studio staff, equipment, electricity, repainting, cleaning, waste, insurance, deposit and cancellation. Identify any compulsory supplier or staffing requirement. |
A daylight photo room, an artist-run studio, a standing set and a purpose-built sound stage solve different problems. Use the smallest space that gives the production enough working room, control and access. If the job records dialogue, acoustic treatment and an attractive photograph are useful starting points for a sound scout, rather than proof that the room is isolated.
Hiring Seattle Crew and Performers
Use Seattle Film Office production resources and the local directory to identify the department and level of experience you need. A small documentary, a client interview and a stage production may need different crew and performer arrangements. Ask the relevant professional organisation about the production before assuming that budget or crew size settles the applicable terms.
| Crew, casting and industry contacts | What to book and what to confirm |
|---|---|
| Seattle production resources | Local crew and production-service leads. Send the role, paid dates, expected working day, location, rate basis and kit requirements. Verify experience and references directly. |
| IATSE craft and local information | Identify the organisation covering the relevant craft and region. Ask about its actual hiring, agreement, training and entry route rather than assuming every department follows one process. |
| SAG-AFTRA production information | For performer agreement enquiries, provide the project type, budget, intended use and casting plan. Check the applicable route before making offers. |
| Northwest Film Forum artist services | Independent or community-media contact. Useful for filmmaker facilities and current access information. Gear rentals and certifications were on hiatus at this check. Follow the active equipment suppliers above for a field kit, and ask the Forum about its separate edit, room and education offerings. |
A useful availability enquiry states the role, dates, location, expected day, rate or budget, prep and wrap, travel, kit and the relevant experience. Separate labour from equipment where both are offered. For performers, include the role, intended use, recording dates, distribution and any special activity so the casting and contract route can be assessed.
| Before confirming a hire | Put in writing |
|---|---|
| Scope and payment | Role, agreed rate basis, paid preparation, working hours, overtime arrangements, expenses, payment date and the entity responsible for payroll or invoicing. |
| Agreement and qualifications | Applicable production agreement, permissions to work, relevant licences or qualifications and insurance responsibilities. Ask the relevant union or guild about its actual route for the production. |
| Kit and delivery | Owner-supplied equipment, transport, replacement cover, prep, media ownership and the expected handoff. A person bringing a camera is not automatically providing sound, lighting or post-production. |
| Access and communication | Call location, parking or public transport information, access needs, dietary requirements, department contact and the process for reporting a schedule change. |
Catering and Crew Meals
For a small Seattle crew, price a practical collected or delivered meal against the working location and actual break. The named local option below is a starting enquiry. If the production needs a staffed unit, remote catering or changing calls, use the film-office supplier route to request an appropriate service.
| Catering / crew meal option | What to book and what to confirm |
|---|---|
| Ingallina's Box Lunch Seattle-area delivery; kitchen contact in Auburn. | Publishes box lunches, platters and a delivery-area enquiry. Confirm the delivery postcode, current minimum, dietary orders, packaging and the actual arrival window. A Seattle service area does not mean the food is collected from central Seattle. |
| Ripe Catering Seattle service; confirm local dispatch | Film/production meals and craft, with light food through full buffets. Identify the Seattle kitchen, actual crew size, diets, minimum, delivery/onsite service and break. |
| Avante Catering Seattle | Individual box lunches and other group meals. Confirm delivery area/charge, minimum per menu, dietary labels, utensils and a fixed handover time for a smaller unit. |
Small-crew meals and production catering
For a short interview day, individually labelled meals can be easier to manage than a buffet needing tables, staff, heating and cleanup. For a larger crew or a remote location, ask a production caterer about its service model, cooking space, power, water, access and daily minimum. A restaurant’s group order and a staffed unit kitchen carry different responsibilities.
| Give the caterer | Confirm before ordering |
|---|---|
| People and diets | Crew and performer headcount, vegetarian or vegan needs, allergies and cross-contact questions. Ask for clearly labelled meals and agree who receives them. |
| Time and place | The actual break, an arrival window, the correct gate or loading area, parking and a named contact. Say whether food will be eaten immediately or needs safe holding and serving equipment. |
| Full cost | Minimum order, notice period, delivery radius, service charge, tax, packaging, utensils, drinks, staffing and any equipment or cleanup charge. Check the deadline for a headcount change. |
| Changing days | A weather move, early call, night work, second location or later meal. Agree how to communicate changes and the last point at which the supplier can accommodate them. |
Keep craft service in the budget as a separate line: drinking water, hot drinks where practical, snacks, cups and waste. Arrange seating and a usable meal area, and give the runner enough time for collection. Catering should support the working schedule; a late meal or an inaccessible handoff point can stop a small crew just as effectively as missing equipment.
Props and Wardrobe Resources
For Seattle art and wardrobe needs, start the search with a clear reference and a written item list. The film-office route is useful for finding current local hire, costume, fabrication and set-dressing contacts. Distinguish a stocked rental house from a person who builds or sources items for a production.
| Props / wardrobe route | What to book and what to confirm |
|---|---|
| Raptor Props Seattle-area props and SFX | Creates and rents screen/stage props, set pieces and SFX gear; the online list is not exhaustive. Send references and dates and ask for actual stock, supervised use, transport and restoration. |
| Make a Scene Seattle / Puget Sound | Prop/decor rental with warehouse pickup/return or arranged delivery. Select actual pieces and confirm appointment, dimensions, condition/security and the full holding period. |
| Earthwise salvage rental Seattle, Tacoma and Aberdeen stores; choose the actual site | Architectural/period materials can be rented for film and other uses. Each branch has different stock: confirm items, handling, pickup, return and damage terms before scheduling the van. |
| Seattle Sets & Props Seattle; props/wardrobe rental enquiry | Prop and wardrobe stock, including specialist items. Request a scene-specific list, permitted use, supervision where required, fitting/viewing and transport; special props need separate filming coordination. |
Send references, dimensions, period, quantities, performer measurements where relevant, and the actual hold and return dates. Ask whether the house allows a viewing appointment, a provisional hold, fittings, alterations, dressing or installation. A prop account can require insurance and replacement values even when the object is used for only one scene.
| Before collection | Before return |
|---|---|
| Agree permitted use | Record whether an item may be worn outdoors, moved, painted, altered, exposed to water or used in action. Obtain separate advice for replicas and effects; ordinary prop hire does not settle those permissions. |
| Check continuity and condition | Photograph each item and label the case, hanger or parts. Build multiples and cleaning time into the plan where a scene changes the condition of a costume or prop. |
| Plan transport and reinstatement | Measure the largest piece, confirm the vehicle and loading crew, and agree packaging, cleaning and restoration. A furniture item that fits on the set may not fit in the booked lift. |
| Track holds and returns | Name one department contact, mark return deadlines and check every item back against the inventory. Confirm charges for missing components, late returns, cleaning or repair. |
Location Supplies and Production Transport
Keep Seattle location support and vehicle arrangements visible in the budget. Send the film office or supplier a list of support items and the exact delivery address. Ask which operator provides the vehicle, driver, installation or collection; equipment access alone does not establish a transport package.
| Location support / transport | What to book and what to confirm |
|---|---|
| Seattle Film Office resources and manual | Use the permit contact to check the proposed production parking, loading and any public-space services. Crew-car parking needs a separate practical plan from truck unloading. |
| Northwest Grip production truck Seattle region | A loaded grip-truck route for smaller commercial/film units. Establish crew/driver, case handling, location access, parking, standby, mileage and return rather than only a truck day rate. |
| Seattle Shuttle production transport Seattle / Puget Sound | Passenger/crew moves, talent transfers and airport runs; explicitly does not supply picture/stunt vehicles. Give seats, cases, call-to-wrap hours and parking, with overtime and backup arrangements. |
Make a separate support order for tables, chairs, shelter, racks, steamers, bins, protection, signs, radios, toilets and drinking water. Establish who delivers, installs, operates and collects each item. Book a complete transport plan with driver requirements, loading times and the final return, rather than assuming an equipment rental includes a vehicle.
| Transport or support item | Cost and access check |
|---|---|
| Van or production truck | Payload, internal dimensions, licence and age conditions, permitted drivers, mileage, fuel or charging, insurance, parking height and return hours. Ask whether equipment may remain inside overnight. |
| Base or holding area | Landowner permission, arrival and departure windows, toilets, lighting, waste, overnight restrictions and the walk or shuttle route to set. Do not send the whole crew to the equipment loading point. |
| Delivery and collection | The actual entrance, lift or stairs, parking, access contact, waiting charges and the person who signs the inventory. Include strike and return in the schedule. |
| Outdoor support | Wind and weather suitability, anchoring or rigging by competent people, safe power distribution and the route for emergency and public access. Do not assume a pop-up shelter can stay up in all conditions. |
Post-Production and Film Labs
Plan the Seattle post-production handoff before hiring the camera package. Use the local directory to find an editor, colourist, sound specialist or facility suited to the release. An equipment-access or community programme should be asked about the specific software, room, support and project conditions rather than assumed to supply an attended finish.
| Post-production / lab | What to book and what to confirm |
|---|---|
| Bad Animals Seattle; 206-443-1500 | Full-service audio post, voice casting and recording. Ask about dialogue, ADR, design, mix, review connections and required versions for the film; confirm which studio, engineer and sessions the quote includes. |
| Northwest Film Forum artist services | Ask about current editing or finishing access, training and any project restrictions. Useful for filmmaker facilities and current access information. Gear rentals and certifications were on hiatus at this check. Follow the active equipment suppliers above for a field kit, and ask the Forum about its separate edit, room and education offerings. |
| Sound Sound Seattle | Audio recording/production with location capabilities for sound effects and film/video. Confirm the actual film-post engineer, dialogue/design/mix scope, format, review schedule and stems. |
| Photographic Center Northwest facilities Seattle 98122; facility rules and training apply | Studio, digital scanning and darkroom access with published facility blocks. Useful for still/analogue workflows; confirm training, reservation and how scanning/studio hours debit the block. This is not a cinema sound-post service. |
Agree the workflow before the first card
Give the editor, colourist and sound team the camera format, frame rate, resolution, colour settings, sync method and delivery target before filming. Test a short camera and sound sample through the proposed workflow. Confirm who copies media, how it is verified, where the separate copies live and who has permission to erase a card.
| Post stage | What the quote should include |
|---|---|
| Editorial and data | Ingest and organisation, proxies, sync, edit time, review rounds, storage, backups and the handoff if the project moves to another editor. Equipment access and an attended editing service are separate bookings. |
| Picture finishing | Conform from the agreed source files, colour sessions, online work, graphics, titles, versioning and output checks. State whether remote review or an attended session is needed. |
| Sound and accessibility | Dialogue editing, noise treatment, ADR, sound design, music, mix, captions, subtitles and any accessible versions required by the release plan. Give the actual running time and number of deliverables. |
| Photochemical or archive work | Stock and processing format, handling, scan resolution, colour workflow, turnaround, shipping and retention of originals. Ask the lab to confirm the specific service before buying stock or exposing an irreplaceable roll. |
Budgeting, Incentives and Funding
Check Washington and local programme information through the official film-office route. A production incentive, an artist grant and subsidised access to equipment have different applicants, timing and conditions. Ask the programme administrator about the actual project and keep any unapproved assistance separate from cash available for the shoot.
| Funding / incentive authority | What to book and what to confirm |
|---|---|
| Seattle Film Office production resources | Request the current state and local incentive links, application guidance and the correct programme contact. Check whether a qualifying entity, expenditure, application before work or approval is required. |
| Northwest Film Forum artist services | Community or independent access route. Establish eligibility, training, subscriptions, project use and actual available resources; discounted access does not automatically provide production funding. |
Treat programme support as a separate research and cash-flow task. Check the applicant, project type, local expenditure, application timing, approvals, reporting and audit requirements with the programme administrator. A guide to filming in a location is not a determination that a particular production qualifies. Keep an unapproved rebate or grant out of the cash available to pay next week’s crew.
| Budget group | Include beyond the headline rate |
|---|---|
| People | Paid prep and wrap, payroll costs, overtime, kit, travel, accommodation, casting, performers, special skills and agreed expenses. |
| Locations and services | Application and location fees, insurance, parking, traffic or other required services, power, toilets, security, protection and reinstatement. |
| Equipment and space | The complete rental build, transport, prep, studio staff, electricity, overtime, cleaning, damage cover and return days. |
| Finishing and reserve | Data and storage, editing, colour, sound, captions, music and rights, festival or delivery versions, contingency and the timing of supplier payments. |
Build the estimate in US dollars and identify taxes and exchange-rate assumptions separately. Compare quotes on the same dates and inclusions, then add a cash-flow column showing deposits and payment deadlines. The HTFS film budget template can help organise those lines; keep the supplier quotations beside the estimate.
Parking, Power, Sound and Company Moves
Map rental pickups and the shoot against the actual bridges, traffic and parking situation. Put the rental collection entrance on the pickup instructions.
For wet-weather days, establish covered loading, equipment holding and a workable route from vehicle to set. Keep the studio's booked hours realistic for drying off and unloading.
Confirm whether a supplier is within Seattle or elsewhere in the region, and whether a delivery service reaches your exact address at the required time.
| Department check | Decision to make at the scout |
|---|---|
| Parking and loading | Where the truck unloads, where it can wait, where crew cars go, whether a marshal or approved traffic arrangement is needed and what happens when the loading space is unavailable. |
| Power | Which circuits or supply are available, the actual load, who approves connections, cable routes and protection. Assign distribution and any temporary supply to competent people. |
| Sound | Ventilation, plant, traffic, neighbours, public use and the time needed to record room tone and clean sound. Agree a practical response to a noisy interruption. |
| Company move | Wrap and load time, travel, unloading, reset, public access and the meal. Put every stage in the schedule; the map’s driving estimate describes only one part of the move. |
Seattle Weather and Daylight Planning
Rain, changing cloud cover and seasonal daylight differences matter for exterior scheduling. Summer heat and periods of smoke can also affect the plan. Use the Seattle/Tacoma NWS map for your location and timing, and agree on a workable indoor alternative.
The table shows monthly averages of daily highs and lows, not the highest or lowest temperatures a crew could encounter. Use it to plan the season, then check the forecast for the actual date, exposure and location. The reference station and normal period are identified below.
| Month | Mean daily high, °F (°C) | Mean daily low, °F (°C) |
|---|---|---|
| January | 47.1 (8.4) | 36.9 (2.7) |
| February | 49.8 (9.9) | 36.9 (2.7) |
| March | 53.8 (12.1) | 39.4 (4.1) |
| April | 58.5 (14.7) | 42.3 (5.7) |
| May | 64.8 (18.2) | 47.3 (8.5) |
| June | 70.0 (21.1) | 52.0 (11.1) |
| July | 75.7 (24.3) | 55.6 (13.1) |
| August | 76.3 (24.6) | 55.9 (13.3) |
| September | 70.5 (21.4) | 52.2 (11.2) |
| October | 59.7 (15.4) | 45.9 (7.7) |
| November | 50.9 (10.5) | 39.9 (4.4) |
| December | 45.7 (7.6) | 35.6 (2.0) |
| Planning period | Local production considerations |
|---|---|
| Before choosing the date | Use the local weather notes above with the intended hours and exact address. Ask the location contact about seasonal access, busy periods and the practical cover space. |
| Exterior preparation | Check wind, rain or snow where applicable, surface conditions, shade or warm holding, and the route for cases. Match protection and clothing to the actual forecast. |
| Light and continuity | Check the date-specific sunrise and sunset and scout the useful light at the chosen location. Record the intended time of day for matching scenes. |
| The final working forecast | Review current NWS warnings and conditions before dispatch. Decide who can call a weather move and communicate it to the owner, crew, meal supplier and rentals. |
Use National Weather Service SEW for the current conditions and warnings for the exact location. Seasonal notes describe planning tendencies, not a forecast. Check sunrise and sunset for the shooting date, the location’s horizon and the available working light on the scout. Buildings, trees, hills and a west-facing room can change the useful window.
Decide who monitors the forecast and when a weather move must be called. Put cover sets, equipment protection, water, shade or warm holding, and the effect on transport in the schedule. Share the decision with crew, location owners and suppliers early enough for them to act.
Information for Visiting and International Crews
For a visiting Seattle production, establish a local production contact and a realistic collection route before booking travel. Include the arriving crew, equipment, location and distribution plan in the enquiry. The local film office can direct location and supplier questions; entry, work and customs questions should go through the responsible official route.
| Visiting-production information | What to book and what to confirm |
|---|---|
| Seattle Film Office production resources | Local production, location and supplier coordination. Ask for a service-company or coordinator referral when the production needs someone responsible for the full local plan. |
| US Department of State visa information | Check the actual traveller, role and activity. Use the official guidance before relying on a particular entry arrangement. |
| US Customs and Border Protection | Check the equipment import and return movement, inventory and applicable documentation before departure. |
Send the local production contact the format, dates, location references, crew arriving from abroad, equipment list, proposed local hires and intended distribution. Establish which company contracts with the crew and suppliers, who handles payroll or invoices and which person is responsible for location and permit enquiries. Put airport collection and kit handover in the schedule.
Check the entry and work requirements for each travelling person and the customs route for the actual equipment movement. Passport nationality, role, payment and activity can change the process. Allow time for these enquiries before booking non-refundable travel, and ask the relevant official authority or an appropriately qualified adviser about the production’s circumstances.
Small Crews, Student Films and Affordable Resources
Useful for filmmaker facilities and current access information. Gear rentals and certifications were on hiatus at this check. Follow the active equipment suppliers above for a field kit, and ask the Forum about its separate edit, room and education offerings.
| Independent / student resource | What to book and what to confirm |

Follow the active equipment suppliers above for a field kit, and ask the Forum about its separate edit, room and education offerings. |
| Production size | A practical way to keep the day manageable |
|---|---|
| One or two people recording an interview | Choose a controllable interior, use a compact tested kit, book a sound check and plan a simple meal. Confirm owner permission and any relevant filming requirements before setting the date. |
| Student short or artist film | Check the institution or resource centre’s eligibility, training, equipment, insurance and project conditions. Reserve actual resources after the script breakdown; membership alone does not secure a booking. |
| Small commercial or branded shoot | Budget commercial insurance, paid labour, the intended usage, reliable transport and the complete delivery. Check whether a discounted artistic-project rate can be used for client work. |
| Larger build or exterior unit | Ask for a properly staffed package and a location plan. A smaller cast does not remove the need for adequate rigging, traffic arrangements, welfare or a workable base. |
Save by simplifying the plan: fewer company moves, a location with usable amenities, a modest tested package and enough preparation. Keep paid roles, transport, meals, sound and backups visible in the budget. Ask suppliers about suitable smaller packages or available off-peak dates with a specific brief they can quote.
Finding Film Work and Training
Start with the local independent or community-media route below and choose training for the work you intend to do. Check prerequisites, residence or membership conditions, practical access and the total fee. For crew work, use a department-specific enquiry with accurate experience, availability and references.
| Training / work and community route | What to book and what to confirm |
|---|---|
| Northwest Film Forum artist services | Useful for filmmaker facilities and current access information. Gear rentals and certifications were on hiatus at this check. Follow the active equipment suppliers above for a field kit, and ask the Forum about its separate edit, room and education offerings. |
| Seattle production resources | Ask about local training providers, paid entry routes and professional organisations. Verify a particular opportunity, its dates and terms directly rather than treating a directory listing as a job. |
| IATSE local and craft information | Find the relevant organisation for the intended craft and region, then check its current entry and training criteria. |
For a first crew enquiry, give the department, relevant training, location, availability and a concise example of the work you can already do. Ask about the actual entry process and paid opportunities rather than sending the same message to every department. A workshop, directory listing or festival introduction is a contact route; check the terms of any job separately.
Compare courses by practical access, teaching time, class size, prerequisites, equipment, accessibility and total cost. For union or guild entry, read the current local criteria and ask the organisation about the relevant category. Keep references and credits accurate, and confirm what the production expects before accepting a call.
Before You Shoot: Seattle Production Checklist
| When | Production checks |
|---|---|
| Before booking | Break down the script; identify the actual authorities; check location feasibility; compare complete supplier quotes; confirm who contracts and pays; and check programme or visitor requirements that must be resolved before work begins. |
| Before the technical scout | Bring location, camera, sound and lighting needs together. Check the agreed footprint, loading, power, public access, washrooms, weather cover, sound and the route for equipment and people. |
| Before sending the call sheet | Confirm permissions and agreements, crew and performer terms, supplier holds, transport, meals, parking, access needs, weather decisions and the exact entrance. Include an owner or facility contact and a production contact who can answer on the day. |
| Before recording | Check the approved working area, equipment build, sound, exposure and sync. Assign media copying and verification, maintain public access and run the day within the agreed location and working conditions. |
| Before leaving and returning | Check every room, item and case; remove agreed signs and protection; restore the location; sign off with the owner; complete rental and prop returns; and confirm the media handoff and next post-production step. |
Keep the paperwork together with the HTFS call sheet, crew contact list and script breakdown sheets. Use the exact approved location entrance and working times; a familiar landmark or a postcode alone may send a driver to the wrong side of the property.
Seattle Filming Questions
Can I currently rent gear from Northwest Film Forum?
Its published gear-rental page said the programme was on hiatus at this check. Do not plan around a checkout unless the organisation directly confirms that access has resumed.
Does one Seattle enquiry cover surrounding communities?
Use the exact filming and support addresses with the local permit route. Surrounding municipalities and controlled properties may have another responsible authority.
Where should I start with local suppliers?
Use the local film-office resources alongside the named rental, studio and meal options above. Ask for the particular department and scale, and confirm the current operator, inventory and terms directly.
Does a studio booking include equipment, power and crew?
Request an itemised quote for the particular room and hours. Space, equipment, electricity, studio staff, operators, prep, strike, cleaning and overtime can be separate. Test dialogue conditions before confirming a room for sound recording.
How should I compare the cost of two rental packages?
Use the same equipment list and collection, shoot and return dates. Add security or insurance, transport, accessories and out-of-hours charges. Confirm substitutions and the support route if something fails.
How early should I order crew meals?
Ask the chosen local supplier for its current cutoff, minimum, delivery area and change policy. Give the actual break, headcount, dietary list, access point and contact. A website enquiry or unconfirmed menu selection does not place an order.
