CSUN Film School Review: Production BA, Costs & Student Feedback

Film School Reviews / United States

Northridge, Los Angeles, California · CTVA BA: Film Production and separate TV / writing routes

CSUN offers a public-university route into filmmaking in Los Angeles. The critical detail is that entering the university or the wider Cinema and Television Arts major is not the same as being approved for upper-division Film Production. Its price also changes substantially with residency and living arrangements.

Our assessment: A serious option for an applicant who wants Los Angeles access without a private-school tuition rate. Resolve the portfolio gate and a realistic course plan first. The public accounts support questions about collaboration and career preparation, but much of the detailed feedback concerns TV, multimedia or graduate writing rather than the Film Production option.

Nonresident supplement$471 per unit in addition to the resident charges; calculate with your planned enrollment. [2]

Choose the right program

Film Production BA

The catalog includes directing, intermediate and senior filmmaking, post-production and craft sequences. Its portfolio decision matters to the entire plan: ask when you apply, what happens after an unsuccessful application and whether another option or another semester would be required. Do not assume a four-year timeline without that answer. [1]

Television, multimedia and undergraduate writing

These are different CTVA routes. A TV graduate’s experience can illuminate a community or shared resource but cannot establish the assessment process or project allocation in Film Production. Likewise, a multimedia editor’s career story is not proof of outcomes for production cinematographers.

Screenwriting MFA

The graduate writing feedback below concerns course depth, mentorship and professional preparation in a separate degree. It should prompt questions from MFA applicants, not a blanket conclusion about the undergraduate camera or sound sequence.

Projects, equipment and access

Ask to see recent work at each stage of the Film Production sequence, including a normal class assignment rather than only award-winning thesis films. Compare the amount of supervised directing, lighting, recording and editing with your current skill level.

Check how senior films are selected and staffed, which roles each student can undertake and what happens when you do not get your preferred role. Ask about access to production insurance, locations, sound recording and post support; a camera package alone does not finish a film.

Los Angeles creates possibilities for meeting working crews, but commuting and paid employment can constrain your participation. Build a timetable that includes the trip to campus, shoots and post sessions, and ask how students with jobs manage the sequence.

FilmSchool.org; undergraduate Narrative Television alumnus, not Film Production

Values practical work, collaborators and faculty while noting resource limits compared with wealthier schools. The option label matters when using this endorsement.

FilmSchool.org; screenwriting MFA alumnus

Criticizes the depth of graduate teaching and feedback, including overlap with undergraduate material. This is a graduate writing concern, not a review of the BA production sequence.

Reddit; graduate who moved from TV Production to undergraduate Screenwriting

Recalls helpful staff and work obtained through other alumni, while acknowledging a difficult job search. The commenter did not complete the Film Production option.

The available detail is uneven across options. Positive TV and writing accounts and critical graduate writing accounts should remain separate. We did not establish a substantial current set of independently verified Film Production BA reviews. That gap is a reason to contact recent students in the specific option, not a reason to invent a school-wide score.

Tuition and the complete budget

All amounts below are in US dollars. The year and pricing unit matter: annual, semester and full-program figures are not interchangeable.

Cost itemPublished figure or question
Resident undergraduate tuition and fees, 2026–27$4,164 per semester or $8,328 across fall and spring at 7 or more units. [2]
Nonresident tuitionAdd $471 per unit to the resident costs. At 30 annual units that supplement alone would be $14,130; your actual enrollment may differ. [2]
Published resident attendance budgets$23,978 living with parents, $29,484 on campus, or $39,918 off campus. These are modeled annual budgets, not just tuition. [2]
Film expensesAsk what required projects cost, which resources are provided and whether optional spending can be kept small.

The financial advantage is largest when resident tuition and a workable housing plan coincide. Nonresidents should calculate their own credit load and establish residency eligibility through the university; moving to California does not by itself prove eligibility. A delayed portfolio approval can also change the number of semesters you must finance.

Admissions and study commitments

Read the current Film Production option catalog before accepting an offer. Separate university admission, major preparation and the upper-division portfolio decision. Transfers should obtain a written evaluation of CTVA equivalents, especially the introductory production requirement, and ask when the portfolio is reviewed. Obtain the current portfolio instructions directly rather than reusing an old student’s successful submission. [1]

Career support and graduate outcomes

The accounts include both alumni-assisted work and difficult job searches. Neither establishes a placement rate. Ask for current internship assistance and examples of entry jobs in your intended department, then speak to graduates who did not direct a high-profile thesis. A classmate’s willingness to recommend you can help, but it is not a guarantee of continuous work.

What to watch out for

  • University admission is not automatic approval for the Film Production upper division.
  • Much of the detailed public evidence concerns adjacent CTVA options. Do not treat it as five Film Production graduate reviews.
  • Low resident tuition does not eliminate Los Angeles housing, transport or irregular freelance income.

How to get more from the course

  • Understand the portfolio criteria early and seek feedback before the submission deadline.
  • Become reliable in a useful crew or post role alongside developing personal films.
  • Keep the final work, clear credits and a practical contact list; a degree title alone cannot demonstrate craft ability.

Compare alternatives

Compare CSUN with CSULB and SFSU as public-university choices, and with USC, LMU and Chapman only after converting their offers into comparable annual net costs. For each, separate admission to the university from access to the intended production route.

Is it worth applying?

CSUN merits serious consideration when its production sequence and realistic cost fit your plans. The deciding evidence should be your route through the portfolio gate, current project access and the work you can afford to complete.

Before accepting, compare the actual offer, required course plan and realistic living budget. Speak separately with a current student and a recent graduate in your intended route.

Common questions

Does admission to CSUN guarantee Film Production access?

No. The catalog specifies preparation and faculty portfolio approval before upper-division Film Production. [1]

Are the MFA complaints about the undergraduate production BA?

No. They concern graduate screenwriting and are labeled separately.

Do nonresidents pay only $8,328?

No. A per-unit nonresident supplement applies in addition to resident tuition and fees. [2]
