Our assessment: availability comes first. Do not pay for a proposed Toronto intake on the strength of an old advertising page or a Montréal tuition quote. If the course reopens, its practical teaching, equipment access, complete cost and graduate support need a fresh program-specific comparison.

Toronto and Montréal must be kept separate

Trebas’s current Montréal Film and Television Production page identifies a Quebec program code and location. Its AEC, language options, charges and admissions arrangements should not be copied into a Toronto assessment.

Older online reviews may also concern audio, music business, event management or another subject. Those experiences may raise useful questions about an institution, but they do not establish the quality of the Toronto production diploma. A review must identify its course and campus before it supports that conclusion.

What the Toronto course advertises

The Ontario page describes development, budgeting, marketing and practical production across formats such as short films, web series and television. A separate Toronto marketing page advertises equipment access, career guidance and a Factory Film Studio relationship, while still listing recurring intakes.

Those pages do not provide the same availability message. Treat the explicit closed-intake notice as a reason to obtain direct written confirmation. A general enquiry form or an older schedule should not be treated as evidence that teaching has resumed.

If admissions describes a replacement course, ask for its legal provider, full title, credential, address, timetable, curriculum and fee agreement. Do not assume a renamed course is the same diploma with the same resources.

Student feedback: what applies and what does not

A July 2021 Toronto discussion begins with an applicant accepted to Film & TV Production asking for reviews. Several replies criticize private colleges in general; one explicitly describes audio engineering in 2007, and others offer second-hand industry opinions. Those replies are not recent, first-hand evaluations of the Toronto film diploma.

In an October 2019 Trebas thread, a self-described attendee questions the return on tuition and describes the difficulty of establishing work, while also describing a successful classmate in audio. The exact film-program relevance is not established. It belongs in the category of historical, program-unconfirmed feedback.

These discussions are useful warnings against assuming a diploma or scholarship guarantees employment. They do not justify a numerical Film Production rating, claims that every student had the same experience or importing audio complaints into a current film assessment.

For an available future course, seek recent graduates from the same campus and program. Ask what they made, how often they used equipment themselves, what feedback they received and which support continued after the course. Ask for examples beyond selected success stories.

Tuition, scholarships and additional spending

The Ontario page lists $18,800. Because it also says applications are closed, that figure should be treated as a published reference for the described course, not an offer price for a new intake. A historical applicant’s scholarship or an advertised Quebec grant does not establish what a Toronto applicant would pay now.

Before paying anything, obtain an itemized agreement showing tuition, application and enrolment charges, compulsory equipment or materials, software, student-production costs and payment dates. Confirm which advertised scholarship you personally qualify for and whether it changes refund calculations or other conditions.

Add living costs and lost earning time. A one-year schedule can reduce the calendar commitment compared with a degree, but it can also leave little room for a job alongside shoots, editing and group assignments. Request a sample busy-week timetable rather than relying on the word “daytime.”

Practical training and equipment questions

If the course is accepting students again, ask to tour the actual teaching and equipment spaces for that intake. Request the current inventory, borrowing policy and student-to-kit numbers. Establish which resources are included in tuition, which require approval and which must be rented or bought outside the school.

Ask how a student moves from a demonstration to independent work. For camera, that means assembling and checking a package, setting exposure and operating it. For sound, it means recording usable dialogue and diagnosing problems. For editing, it means organizing media, shaping scenes and completing a handover or delivery.

Find out whether every student receives meaningful practical turns, how roles are selected and what instructors do when a team member stops contributing. An attractive group film does not show how much any one student learned.

Partnerships, career support and outcomes

The marketing page describes a studio relationship and career guidance. Ask which opportunities are guaranteed within the course, which involve selection and which depend on external productions being available. Request current written terms rather than assuming an older partnership remains active.

For employment claims, ask for the course, campus, cohort year, respondent numbers and definition of employment. A short unrelated job, one paid production day and sustained work in a chosen department are different outcomes. Alumni credits and lists of possible careers do not provide that breakdown.

Before accepting a future offer

  • Confirm that the course is running and that the provider and teaching location match the agreement.
  • Compare the complete curriculum and supervised practical time with other Toronto programs.
  • Inspect the actual kit and booking arrangements, including busy production weeks.
  • Speak with recent students from the same diploma and ask about finished work and feedback.
  • Read the applicable withdrawal, refund and complaint procedures before paying a deposit.

Use the Film School Reality Checklist to record the answers. Keep the course description and written promises supplied during recruitment.

Toronto alternatives

For production diplomas, compare Humber, George Brown, relevant Seneca courses and Toronto Film School. For a longer university filmmaking route, compare York and TMU.

Compare available courses rather than delaying a decision indefinitely for an unconfirmed reopening. Match the route to your intended work, academic goals and budget.

Common questions

Is Trebas Toronto currently accepting film students?

The Ontario program page said intakes were closed to new applications when checked. Confirm any change directly with the provider.

Can I use Trebas Montréal tuition to budget for Toronto?

No. They are different campus and program arrangements. Obtain a Toronto-specific offer and charges.

Do the online complaints all concern Film Production?

No. Some clearly concern audio or other subjects; others do not identify the program. They must not be treated as a single film-review sample.

Should you consider Trebas Toronto?

First establish that there is an actual open course to consider. If there is, judge the current provision and written agreement against available alternatives. Until then, an older price, recurring-intake advertisement or strong opinion in a forum is not enough to make an informed enrolment decision.
