UCLA Film School Review: BA, MFA, Costs & Student Feedback

Film School Reviews / United States

Los Angeles, California · Film BA & separate graduate programs

UCLA is worth considering if you want filmmaking within a broad university education. It is less straightforward if you expect a production conservatory from your first term. The undergraduate BA and the graduate programs need different evaluations, and California residency makes a substantial difference to the budget.

Our assessment: A promising undergraduate option for someone who values film history, general education and later production study together. Graduate applicants should judge the exact concentration, supervisors and project structure. Current public evidence is too limited to give the BA a confident student-satisfaction score.

Choose the right program

The undergraduate Film BA

The official BA description places foundational study in the first two years, production in the junior year and concentration work with an internship in the senior year. Advanced courses can require approval. Transfer students are expected to complete their course in six quarters and need the appropriate preparation. Ask for a planner for your entry route rather than assuming every four-year applicant and transfer follows the same sequence. [1]

Graduate production and writing

UCLA lists distinct graduate concentrations, including narrative and documentary directing, cinematography, producing, screenwriting and animation. Availability and application materials should be checked with the particular program. A positive MFA screenwriting account tells you about writing training; it does not demonstrate that a directing student gets enough supervised time with actors. [2]

Acting and professional courses

Theater admissions and performance training are separate from the film BA. UCLA’s professional and summer offerings also need their own comparisons: taking a course modeled on graduate teaching is not the same as joining a degree cohort. Confirm the credential, academic credit, facilities entitlement and access to other departments before paying. [2]

Projects, equipment and access

The BA’s broad structure can give you a stronger critical vocabulary and time to explore subjects outside film. The tradeoff is that a person primarily seeking continuous set work should investigate how much practical experience is available before upper-division production.

For any graduate offer, ask for the number of films you originate, the roles in which you crew other students’ work and the feedback schedule. An impressive thesis screening tells you what selected students achieved; it does not show the experience of everyone entering the course.

Request recent student films from the same concentration, including ordinary class assignments. Ask how equipment is allocated, whether specialist classes have capacity limits and whether a delayed project could extend enrollment. Do not substitute a comparison of camera brands for a comparison of teaching.

Values a close cohort, teaching attention and the curriculum, while describing less elaborate facilities than some competitors. This is a historical graduate account; its class size and equipment observations should not be presented as current facts.

FilmSchool.org; self-described MFA screenwriting student

Praises teachers, collaborators and the development of writing samples but wants stronger industry introductions and questions the cost. These concerns are relevant to writing applicants rather than evidence about production classes.

Read the original account and discussion

The useful pattern is about fit and expectations: some graduate students value intensive teaching while still wanting more professional access. The weakness in the evidence is its age and concentration coverage. We have not identified a sufficiently detailed, recent independent BA account to claim that undergraduate students consistently love or dislike the program.

Tuition and the complete budget

All amounts below are in US dollars. The year and pricing unit matter: annual, semester and full-program figures are not interchangeable.

Cost itemPublished figure or question
New undergraduate university fees, 2026–27$16,430 in the published budget, including UC tuition and campus charges. [3]
Nonresident supplement$39,270 additional for the year in the same budget. Residency is a formal university determination. [3]
Annual on-campus attendance estimate$45,500 resident; $84,770 nonresident. Housing and other estimated living expenses are included; individual spending varies. [3]
Graduate production budgetRequest the current rate and required enrollment for your concentration. Undergraduate figures are not an MFA quote.

For a nonresident, compare the complete UCLA offer with private-school offers after grants. Do not assume that moving to California automatically changes your tuition classification. Ask financial aid to identify which expenses are estimates, which are billed and which film-production costs sit outside the standard allowance.

Admissions and study commitments

Start with the official TFT admissions page and follow the instructions for your degree and entry year. Undergraduate, transfer and graduate routes are not interchangeable. Plan enough time for written work and any creative materials, and verify the current rules before commissioning a film or paying a portfolio consultant. Ask whether the concentration you want admits directly or involves later approval. [2]

Career support and graduate outcomes

The BA includes an internship component in its published structure, but an internship is not a guaranteed paid job. Ask who finds placements, how academic credit works and whether transport or unpaid hours create extra costs. For graduate study, request concentration-specific examples of the transition into work and support after finishing. Do not use a graduate screenwriter’s experience of industry introductions as an undergraduate placement statistic.

What to watch out for

  • A broad BA can disappoint someone expecting production specialization immediately. Check the sequence of actual required classes before choosing it over a conservatory.
  • Nonresident tuition can change the value comparison dramatically. Keep residency assumptions out of your budget until UCLA confirms them.
  • Public graduate reviews from 2020 are useful questions for a visit, not an audit of today’s faculty, facilities or student satisfaction.

How to get more from the course

  • Use non-film courses to develop material and subject knowledge rather than treating them simply as obstacles to production.
  • Ask about student film groups and crew opportunities early, while respecting any equipment and course restrictions.
  • For a graduate offer, arrange conversations with current students in the exact concentration and ask how many rounds of notes they receive before a shoot or final script.

Compare alternatives

USC, LMU and Chapman offer different combinations of university education and production intensity in Southern California. FSU is worth comparing for production funding and public-university costs. Match undergraduate offers to undergraduate offers; graduate reputation should not decide a BA choice.

Is it worth applying?

Apply if the degree’s balance of critical study, university education and production matches your aims. For the BA, fill the current student-evidence gap through direct conversations; for an MFA, make the concentration the center of the decision.

Before accepting, compare the actual offer, required course plan and realistic living budget. Speak separately with a current student and a recent graduate in your intended route.

Common questions

Is UCLA’s undergraduate film degree a BFA?

No. The current official program is a BA in Film, Television & Digital Media. Third-party listings using a different degree label should not override the university. [1]

Do the figures here apply to the MFA?

No. The quoted attendance budgets are for new undergraduates in 2026–27. Graduate applicants need a concentration-specific quote.

Does this review establish current BA student satisfaction?

No. The identified detailed accounts are graduate perspectives and are labeled accordingly. That gap is a reason to speak to current BA students, not to invent a rating.
