Emerson’s strongest attraction is the amount of media-making around the degree: classmates, student organizations, campus productions and an alumni community. That can be valuable, but it does not make the high tuition automatically worthwhile. The right question is how much supervised practice and usable work your particular route will deliver.

Our assessment: Worth a close look for an applicant who wants a busy creative community and can secure a sustainable net offer. Less convincing if the budget depends on a guaranteed Los Angeles internship or a high-paying first job. Older alumni accounts need to be read alongside the current BA and BFA requirements.
| Decision point | What to know |
|---|---|
| Main routes | Media Arts Production BA and Film, Television, and Media Arts BFA. Older reviews often use Visual and Media Arts or VMA. |
| Base | Boston, with a separate Los Angeles semester opportunity rather than a promise of four years in Hollywood. |
| 2026–27 tuition | $60,160 for two full-time semesters; institutional fees and living expenses are additional. |
| BA/BFA distinction | The current BFA page lists 68 program credits against 56 for the BA. These are program requirements, not the total degree-credit count. [1] |
| Evidence | Undergraduate alumni accounts include writing-focused and broader VMA experiences. A recently posted retrospective can still describe study a decade earlier. |
Choose the right program
BA: broader media production
The BA combines production with history, criticism and theory, followed by intermediate and advanced work. Its official description includes filmmaking, writing, sound, documentary and emerging media. It also states that students retain rights to their work. Treat that as a starting point for reading the project agreement, including permissions for music and performances. [2]
BFA: more room for the major
The BFA has a larger program-credit requirement than the BA. Build a side-by-side degree planner before deciding that the initials alone make one better. Check the actual advanced courses and capstone sequence available in your entry year, particularly if you are transferring. The current BFA title should not be confused with older VMA course names in alumni reviews. [1]
Writing, acting and graduate study
A screenwriting-focused undergraduate account is useful for writing applicants but cannot establish the depth of camera or sound instruction. Acting and graduate film courses require their own curriculum, admission and fee comparisons. This guide assesses the undergraduate production environment and identifies the route behind the feedback.
Projects, equipment and access
Emerson advertises the Paramount Sound Stage, equipment checkout, camera certification and an XR studio. Access rules matter more than the inventory: ask which courses qualify you, whether an independent project can book equipment and how much technical support accompanies a reservation. A certification opportunity is different from guaranteed access to a preferred camera for every film. [2]
Student organizations can provide additional set practice. Ask how beginners enter those crews, whether selection is competitive and what happens if you cannot commit to late or weekend shoots. A program that relies heavily on extracurricular work may feel different to a commuter or someone working alongside college.
The Los Angeles semester adds a different location and internship search, not an automatic paid placement. Compare its travel, housing, parking and course costs with remaining in Boston. Ask who secures the internship, what happens if an application fails and whether the work fits your intended craft. [2] [3]
Student and graduate experiences
Accounts are attributed to their original sources. Student identity and enrollment are not independently verified. Selected profiles and project reports are labeled separately from personal course reviews.

Values classes, student productions and alumni relationships. Describes difficulties joining the social community as an off-campus transfer and regrets not becoming more involved. The posting date does not make the attendance recent.
Praises writing development and collaborators, while making the value judgment conditional on scholarship support. This is a writing perspective, not a camera-course audit.
Acknowledges equipment access, cinematography classes and the network but considers the educational value weak relative to the price. The reported personal spending is not a current tuition quote.
Values some teachers and extracurricular work but criticizes inconsistent practical depth and the LA experience. These are historical claims to test against current rules, not descriptions of today’s facilities.
The repeated issue is access to the experience, not simply the existence of it. Some alumni made strong use of the community; others found it difficult to enter or considered the academic return insufficient. Four self-reports from different periods do not establish a current satisfaction rate. Their useful common questions concern transfer integration, practical teaching and what the LA semester actually provides.
Tuition and the complete budget
All amounts below are in US dollars. The year and pricing unit matter: annual, semester and full-program figures are not interchangeable.
| Cost item | Published figure or question |
|---|---|
| Full-time tuition, 2026–27 | $30,080 per semester for 12–16 credits; $60,160 across fall and spring. [3] |
| Student services fee | Boston and Kasteel Well: $550 per semester in the published table. LA has a different listed charge. [3] |
| Housing example | The published double-room food-and-housing figure is $22,464 annually. This is additional to tuition, not a complete attendance budget. [3] |
| Other spending | Course fees, applicable insurance, supplies, transport and film expenses require separate consideration. Additional credits can be charged individually. [3] |
Compare the renewable grant offer against all required semesters. For a transfer, ask for the remaining course sequence before assuming that accepted credits reduce time in college. For LA study, make a second budget rather than treating it as a free change of location. Keep the expected cost of your films separate from the university’s standard living allowance.
Admissions and study commitments
Use the current undergraduate application instructions and the requirements for your chosen degree. Ask how transfer credit affects prerequisites, capstone eligibility and access to an LA semester. Portfolio requirements and deadlines can change; the official application page should govern the submission, not a checklist in an old forum discussion. Identify your personal role on collaborative samples. [5]
Career support and graduate outcomes
The alumni accounts describe introductions and collaborators, which are useful possibilities rather than a measured placement result. Ask for recent examples of ordinary graduates entering assistant editing, production assistance, development or other work relevant to you. Also ask what career support remains after graduation. One successful alumnus hiring another does not establish how quickly most students find paid work.

What to watch out for
- A busy extracurricular scene may require time, persistence and selection by peers. Ask how a new student or transfer gets their first meaningful crew role.
- Older VMA accounts predate the current program naming and may describe different course rules. Match the attendance period before applying a criticism or endorsement.
- The Los Angeles opportunity should be assessed through internship responsibilities and a complete budget, rather than treated as a placement guarantee.
How to get more from the course
- Join a manageable production organization early and become dependable in one useful role before overcommitting to several crews.
- Use feedback to improve a specific scene, script or cut; keep evidence of revisions instead of collecting only credits.
- For a transfer or commuter, plan deliberately how you will meet collaborators outside class and which shoots your schedule can support.

Is it worth applying?
Apply if Emerson’s actual course choices and creative community fit the work you want to make. Before accepting, resolve the practical questions for your circumstances: equipment eligibility, transfer progression, extracurricular access and the price of any LA semester.
Before accepting, compare the actual offer, required course plan and realistic living budget. Speak separately with a current student and a recent graduate in your intended route.
Common questions
Does the BFA require more program study than the BA?
Yes. The current BFA page lists a larger program-credit requirement. Compare the full degree planners and the specific advanced courses you need. [1]
Are recent review dates evidence of recent attendance?
Not necessarily. The 2026 account here explicitly looks back about ten years. We keep posting and attendance context separate.
Is the Los Angeles semester a guaranteed paid internship?
No guarantee of paid placement is established by the material reviewed. Ask who secures the position and how unsuccessful searches are handled.
Sources and review method
Reviewed 31 October 2026. Official program pages establish the advertised structure and published fees; independent accounts are used for attributed student experience. Older accounts and other programs are labeled where included. These sources do not constitute an inspection of teaching or a representative student survey.
We do not publish a numerical student-satisfaction score from this uneven sample. Public reviews may be selective, anonymous or duplicated across platforms. Google school ratings, when available, also mix programs and visitor experiences; they are not a production-course rating. No direct Google review collection is claimed here.
