SCAD Film School Review: BFA, Campuses, Costs & Student Feedback

Film School Reviews / United States

Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia · Film & Television BFA & separate graduate degrees

SCAD’s Film & Television BFA sits inside a wider art-and-design education. The combination can support collaboration with performers, designers and other makers. It also means applicants should inspect the foundation curriculum, campus and actual production sequence rather than treating the school as four years of uninterrupted set work.

Our assessment: Worth considering for a student who wants filmmaking inside a broad creative institution and can afford the net offer. The main questions are how much practical repetition the chosen campus delivers, how equipment and crews are allocated, and whether the wider foundation work fits your goals.

Choose the right program

BFA and the art-school foundation

The published BFA includes foundation work in design, drawing, color, collaboration and time-based design. Ask how that work connects to filmmaking and how soon you begin practical film assignments. A foundation class can improve visual thinking, but it should be a deliberate educational choice rather than an unexpected cost after enrolling. [1]

Atlanta versus Savannah

Both locations appear on the current BFA page. Verify where your required courses run and which resources your actual campus can use. Do not assume a facility announced for one city is available during normal classes in the other. Ask current students from the intended campus about travel between facilities, checkout and production support.

Graduate film and acting

The 2019 graduate review below criticizes overlap with undergraduate classes. That is a question for MA/MFA applicants to test against current syllabi. Acting training needs its own evaluation of performance instruction and opportunities; film crews working with actors do not establish an acting program’s quality.

Projects, equipment and access

The current BFA core includes production audio, lighting and camera, and story editing. Later choices include directing actors, assistant editing and advanced lighting, among other options. Ask which choices can fit your actual course sequence. [1]

SCAD promotes substantial production facilities. The important questions are the hours you can use them, prerequisites, project approval, technical support and whether bookings depend on selection. Ask for examples of ordinary required exercises as well as polished final films. [3]

The selected graduate profile below emphasizes frequent peer crews and preparation. Ask how a beginner gets involved and how weekend work fits the academic load. A student who must work off campus may have a different experience from someone free to crew every weekend.

Get written clarification of film ownership, permitted portfolio use, music and performer clearances before making a project. Public comments can confuse rights ownership with the school’s permission to exhibit work; the actual agreement should settle that distinction.

FilmSchool.org; graduate Film & Television reviewer, exact MA/MFA and campus not established

Appreciates resources and scholarship support but criticizes course depth and overlap with undergraduate study. The degree ambiguity limits how directly it can inform a particular graduate application.

Stuudeo / Student Films Weekly; selected BFA Film & Television graduate profile, not an anonymous review

The profile connects cinematography development with preparation, repeated shoots and peer collaboration. It is a positive editorial selection by a student-film platform, not a typical-outcome study or an independent satisfaction rating.

The historical reviews point to a difference between having resources and obtaining a coherent learning experience. The selected cinematography story shows one way a student used the environment; it cannot answer how often other students obtain the same practice. Current campus-specific conversations are needed before treating either the praise or criticism as today’s normal experience.

Tuition and the complete budget

All amounts below are in US dollars. The year and pricing unit matter: annual, semester and full-program figures are not interchangeable.

Cost itemPublished figure or question
Full-time undergraduate tuition, 2026–27$14,325 per quarter for three courses / 15 credits; $42,975 across three quarters. [2]
Initial chargesThe published undergraduate page lists a $100 application fee and $500 enrollment fee. Check the current payment and refund terms before committing. [2]
Living and production spendingHousing, food, transport, materials and film budgets are additional. Ask which equipment and consumables are included.
Extra enrollmentSummer, additional courses and graduate study need separate calculations; do not assume three-quarter undergraduate tuition covers them.

Evaluate the grant offer over all required quarters and check renewal conditions. A transfer should request the remaining foundation and film sequence, not just a total of accepted credits. If changing campus, calculate any additional housing and travel consequences. A production budget should remain manageable without assuming an exceptional film will immediately generate income.

Admissions and study commitments

Use current undergraduate application and portfolio guidance reached through the official degree page. Ask how prior art or film coursework is assessed and which foundation requirements remain after transfer. Graduate applicants should inspect the exact MA/MFA curriculum, any cross-listed undergraduate classes and the supervision of final work before applying. [1]

Career support and graduate outcomes

Ask for Film & Television outcomes separated by campus, degree and graduation year. An institution-wide creative-career percentage may include many other majors and jobs outside filmmaking. Request examples of ordinary first jobs and the assistance available to graduates still looking for work. A strong selected short film demonstrates an individual’s work, not average earnings.

Explore the local industry in our Savannah and Atlanta film city guides, choosing the one relevant to your campus. If you are considering an entry route into production, read what a production assistant does before comparing course promises with the work.

What to watch out for

  • Do not assume Atlanta and Savannah students have identical facilities or course schedules.
  • Quarter tuition must be converted to the full academic-year figure before comparison.
  • Broad art foundations and peer-set commitments require time; make sure that structure fits both your aims and your work schedule.

How to get more from the course

  • Use design and collaboration classes to improve actual visual decisions in your films.
  • Choose a manageable number of peer projects and become reliable in a craft rather than overloading every weekend.
  • Seek feedback before a shoot and after an edit so the next project tests a specific improvement.

Is it worth applying?

SCAD is most persuasive when its broad art education, practical community and affordable net offer align. Resolve the campus-specific access and course questions before allowing a facility tour or selected success story to settle the decision.

Before accepting, compare the actual offer, required course plan and realistic living budget. Speak separately with a current student and a recent graduate in your intended route.

Common questions

Is Film & Television available only in Savannah?

The current BFA page lists both Savannah and Atlanta. Confirm the campus and course plan on your offer. [1]

Is $14,325 the annual tuition?

No. It is the listed full-time quarter charge for 2026–27. Three quarters total $42,975 before other costs. [2]

Do these film accounts assess SCAD acting?

No. They concern Film & Television or a film graduate profile. Acting requires separate performance-program evidence.
